Diabetes commonly affects the eyes of patients in various ways. It causes direct damage to the retina which is the light sensitive area of your eyes. People with long standing diabetes have a higher risk of developing retinopathy. It is estimated that about 70% of patients who have had diabetes for over 15 years will experience some form of damage to the eyes.
The most efficient way of preventing eye problems is having regular evaluation done and getting all treatment done in its early stages to prevent permanent loss of vision. This is especially because this tends to be a silent condition.
